💛 Day 2 - Dan Shui and Shilin Night Market

The daily breakfast buffet was disappointing cuz not to my liking, haha. Noodles, assorted veggies, potato waffles fries, fried rice, spring roll, porridge, bread, toast, minced pork noodles, steamed buns etc.

Ximending day time

They have lanes for families and for elderly. I thought it is a good initiative. The cabin also have seats for families and elderly.

Is that the MRT mascot? Haha So cute~

How to go to Dan Shui (Tamsui) from Ximen:
take the Songshan line (to SongShan terminal station) from Ximen (Blue line) --> ZhongShan Station (Green/Red interchange line) --> Tamsui-Xinyi Line (to Tamsui; Red line). *when the train is reaching Beitou station, check if the train is going to Xinbeitou or Tamsui.

The train journey took about 50min, including waiting time and walking time.

There is a drugstore(康是美)beside Dan Shui station. A medium sized store.

Dan Shui station

Dan Shui Old Street (Tamsui Old Street, 淡水老街) is an area of shops (selling souvenirs, accessories etc), restaurants, 小吃 snacks and carnival games.

There is also a big Japanese drugstore 日藥本舖 in Dan Shui!

Some of the must eat and must buy :

- Agei (阿給) : a fried bean curd with dong fen stuffing that is braised with fish paste. famous in Dan Shui

- Ah Po Tie Dan Iron Egg  阿婆鐵蛋 : originated in the Tamsui District. The eggs are recooked and dried several times which resulted in shrunken eggs that are dark in color, chewy and full of flavours (sweet, slightly salty and spicy).

-  Original Cake 現烤蛋糕 : very long queue! But smells really good. Main ingredients is eggs and buttermilk. There's cheese version too.

Retro children's arcade

At the end (or start) of the street, there are a few of the mobile stalls.

 Ma Zu Temple (媽祖庙)

10minutes walk from Dan Shui station.

Mochi! Taste slightly different from Sg mochi. Lesser sugar and it's long in shape.

Agei (阿給) - The original Agei Shop (正宗阿给老店)

The shop is small and crowded. Got to squeeze. There is a 2nd level but most customers are at level 1.

Meat ball (肉丸) and Agei  (阿给)Only 35NT each. I don't like the fish paste sauce, I think is fish paste sauce? Not as nice as I thought it will be. :T

One of the many stalls that sell fried snacks. A box costs NT$100.

Believe it or not Art Museum 淡水信不信由你搜奇博物館

Opening hours: 1130am to 930pm (Mon to Fri)
11am to 10pm (Sat and Sun)

There's an entrance fee, less than SGD$10. It's small museum. If you have free time and spare cash, go in and take a look. I took photos of some of the weird stuff in the museum.

World's largest 2 headed tortoise.

2 headed rooster and a double snot piglet.

日本河童 A Japanese mermaid corpse

This Chinese man was born with 4 pupils.

In the Qing Dynasty, women who don't "behave" themselves will be punished by siting on this penis thing naked, and roamed around the city.

Lunch was at Dark Palace Taiwanese Gourmet  黑殿飯店

Address: 251, Taiwan, New Taipei City, Tamsui District, 中正路11-10號
Opening hours: 11am to 830pm daily

Chicken thigh leg and pork ribs rice. The portion was really huge.

Shilin Night Market 士林夜市

From Ximen (Blue/Green Line), take to Jiantan 劍潭站  (Red Line towards Tansui). Journey about 15min, excluding walking time. Exit 1

The crossroads towards Shi Lin. There is a big Japanese drugstore 日藥本舖. (Exit 1 from Jiantan station)

Shilin basement food court. There's an escalator down. Toilets are quite dirty, try not to drink a lot of water.

Most of the seafood stalls sell similar food, pricing a little different. For example, some stalls sell a plate of 5 abalones for NT$100, some sell for NT$150.

Shrimp omelette (NT$60)

Abalones 8 for NT$200 or NT$250

Pepper and Salt Scallops NT$150

Stir Fry Clams NT$200

Roast fan scallop (4 for NT$200)

Roast Oysters (5 for NT$200)

Porter prices aren't much different from SG. Probably just some of the designs that couldn't be found in SG.

The big chicken chop that can be found in Ximending. Always long queue.

Beef cubes! I love it. Juicy and flavourful. Stalls can be found in Ximending and in Shilin.

Takopachi ~ Can choose from a few flavours - seaweed, mayo, cheese etc

A sight that we locals don't see it. The shop keepers will wait for the garage truck by the road side with bags of rubbish and they will threw up to the trunk.

Back to Ximending!

Sad looking doggie... Or he is just bored?

Dreamcolor drink stall. It's behind Uniqlo and Cinemark Ximen.

They make the most beautiful picture worthy photo~ Remember not to throw away the bottle! Wash the bottle to get a NT$10 discount for your next drink.

Chargrilled mochi ! Chewy and flavourful. But the cheese serving is not generous enough.

Prince Cheese Potato.

Deep fried whole potato with lots of nacho cheese. Not bad, can try!

大肠包小肠 (Sticky rice wrapped with Taiwan pork sausage)

Quite nice! They add sweet corns, spring onions etc.

I don't know if this is fish egg or fish ball.

The famous but (overrated according to a cabbie) Ah Zong Mian Xian/Ay-chung, Rice-noodles  (阿宗面线)

Address: 108, Taiwan, Taipei City, Wanhua District, 峨眉街8-1號

Disappointing cuz we expected oysters but there is none, only pig intestines. The staff didn't even bother to inform us if they run out of oysters or they are only selling pig intestines. Thumb down.

The famous Red Building in Ximending was under renovation. There are a few pubs/cafes nearby; good for chilling out.
